A smart road design that features glow-in-the-dark tarmac and illuminated weather indicators will be installed in the Netherlands from mid-2013.
Although the execution of this concept is as simple as using specialized paints and powders, it strikes me as one of the most forward-thinking and futuristic plans I've heard in quite some time.
Providing simple, graphical indicators as to the status and safety of the road — both in day and night — is an extraordinarily interesting and endlessly useful idea.
Typically I'd expect for something like this to be stuck in developmental and political limbo for years, but the Netherlands is pressing right ahead with installations beginning in mid-2013. I can't wait to see some photos of how this actually works in practical use.
